We've got to stop killing animals.
I'd really like to say that the time for the human species to completely re-evaluate its relationship with the (rest of the) animal kingdom "has arrived" .. but, in fact, it's (sadly) long overdue.
How is it that we can put humans on the moon, build microchips that can perform billions of calculations per second, and develop devices that can be controlled by thought alone .. yet we are somehow blind to the fact that we share this tiny, fragile, finite planet with the (rest of the) animal kingdom.
Most of us believe that humans are not expendable. Neither are animals. Every single animal species is almost certainly totally unique in the entire universe, and, once extinct, may never be seen or known again.
Furthermore .. animals think .. they know pain .. some of them feel emotions .. they protect their young, as we do ..
We kill animals mainly for food. In Western countries, most animals destined to become food for humans are factory-processed in appalling conditions. (I suppose there's a certain kind of logic to this, as they are destined to be "killed anyway" .. but I feel obliged to point out that it was this very same train of logic that allowed for the brutality of the Jewish Holocaust) ..
Fortunately, though, for most of us living in the West, there will soon be meat alternatives that will eliminate the need to warehouse and process living sentient creatures. This may not be the case, however, in certain under-developed parts of the world, where hunting animals for food may still be necessary (although the very fact that there still *are* under-developed parts of the world is a mark of shame on the wealthier nations, where billions of dollars are spent building bombs and caring for pets).
Unhappily, then, hunting animals for food may continue to be necessary in certain parts of the world, and for a limited period of time.
But .. hunting animals for sport has got to stop. Immediately. Sorry guys, but where's the glory in killing a beast when you're the only one with a gun?
There's more to be said about all of this. Perhaps you might wish to add your thoughts.

Amen.
I found a quote that is relevant to your comment about hunting for sport.
"Whether hunting is right or wrong, a spiritual experience, or an outlet for the killer instinct, one thing it is not is a sport. Sport is when individuals or teams compete against each other under equal circumstances to determine who is better at a given game or endeavor. Hunting will be a sport when deer, elk, bears, and ducks are...given 12-gauge shotguns."
The woods were made for the hunters of dreams,
The brooks for the fishers of song;
To the hunters who hunt for the gunless game
The streams and the woods belong.
~Sam Walter Foss
Anna, I *so* agree with your comments .. and the 'sport' quote you offer says much better what I was trying to get across.
wow, ok you guys have totally motivated me back to the veggie 'way'. Concern for animal welfare is the reason I did it in the fist place, but kind of fell of the wagon lol.
ok, BUT if I happen across a bear with a 12 gauge shotgun, then its on....
Hahaha, right on, Nikki.
I understand that it's hard to "go vegetarian", especially since we've eaten meat our whole lives.
It took a little while for me to truly internalize it (animal cruelty and welfare), but when I finally realized that I would never want to harm an animal for any reason, I stopped wanting to eat meat, period. I look at meat now, and I think that it's just wrong to eat the flesh of another living creature.
It's not that I judge other people because they do eat meat. I just will not support that industry, and I'm doing my part to show my respect for animals.
^_^
Anna .. good for you!
Nikki .. good luck getting back on the veggie wagon!
Philip .. you have some serious food approach issues to think through ..
lol, go veggies!!
I did the tofu for lunch, peanutbutter tomorrow (I'll think of you anna lol)
It is hard, and I dont mind if anyone else does, but the industry is pretty horrible. How does a mcdonalds cheeseburger only cost 2 dollars????
I forgot how much CHEAPER it is when you dont eat meat too(not counting the 2 dollar cheeseburger lol), quite the bonus.
